Understanding why your dog is who he is........

One of the basic rules in taking care of a dog is to understand its natural environment and behaviourdog breeds - young golden. It is wise for a dog breeder to be aware of the dogs breed to better understand its behavioural patterns, social interaction and particular needs.

Through the years, dogs have been selectively bred from the same ancestral lines or cross bred from different lines. Now, there are a wide variety of dog breeds that you can choose from in selecting a pet.

Each dog breed is different. Some breeds require a lot of attention, grooming techniques and exercise while others may not. They also differ in temperament, training and physiological needs.

The seven dog breeds groups are as follows: The Sporting group, The Hound group, The Working group, The Herding group, The Terrier group, The Non-Sporting group and the Toy Group.

THE SPORTING GROUP
Weimaraner
These groups of dogs are also known as hunting dogs. They have great noses and can smell their prey’s miles away. Most of the dogs belonging in this group love the water and are good swimmers. There are at least 26 recognized breeds in this group. Among this group belongs the Golden Retriever and the Labrador.

Retrievers love to swim and retrieve game shot into the water. They can usually dive deep into the water, swim out and retrieve downed game by following hand, verbal and dog whistle commands. They have good memory and can remember where the location of the downed game.

 


THE HOUND GROUP

There are two types of hounds, namely the sighthounds and the smell hounds. Sighthounds have greadog temperament - beagle puppyt eye sight and endurance and are adapted for their visual accuracy and speed. Their method is what is known as “coursing.” They can see their prey at large distances and can chase it, stalk, pursue until it gets exhausted. They do their work quietly and silently. They are known for their highly independent nature. Smell hounds primarily hunt by scent and corner their prey by sniffing them out. Most of smell hounds have deep and booming voices and are used when following a scent trail or running after a trail. At least 32 dog breeds comprise this group. Examples are Afghan hound, Beagle, Greyhound, Bloodhound and the Norwegian elkhound. Lurches are a cross breed between a sight hound and a scent hound.

THE WORKING GROUP

Known for their sensitivity, this dog group can sense danger from far away and eventually warn their masters about it. They can be known as guard dogs. There are at least 25 breeds belonging in this group. The Doberman, Siberian Husky, Samoyed, Great Pyrenees and the Portuguese Water dog are some of the well known working dogs. The work description of working dogs varies from being an attack dog, detection dog, sled dog, grief or guard dog, police dog, rescue dog, bomb sniffing dogs, search and rescue dog and therapy dogs. They are usually
trained according to the need and objective of the owner.

 
THE HERDING GROUP

Usually, dogs belonging in this group work with live stocks which are farm animals. They are very smart and need plenty of exercise. Since they need to protect the herd from fierce animals such as wolves, herding dog’s anatomical composition makes them fast, strong and agile.There are more or less 20 breeds in this category. Some of the popular breeds are the American White Sheperd, Collie, German Sheperd and the Old English Sheep Dog.

 

jack russell terriers THE TERRIER GROUP


This group is particularly unique because of its hunting skills. They are exclusively used to hunt down mammals by locating the den, set or the living set of the target. Mostly, pest animals are hunted down by the terriers. They catch their prey by hiding underneath the ground. They have excellent senses of smell, are agile, very smart and have great fighting instinct. There are 27 dog breeds, like the Scottish terrier and the Yorkshire terrier, belong to this group.

THE NON SPORTING GROUP

Dogs in this particular group are made for different types of jobs and are not fitted in any of the breed groups. There are 17 recognized breeds belonging to this group. Dalmatians and Bulldogs are under this category.

 

THE TOY GROUP
dog breeds - Shih Tzu
Also known as companion dogs, this group is known for its small sizes and cuteness. They are either hound, sporting or terrier but have been classified under this category because of their sizes. There are 21 dog breeds like the Chihuahua, shih Tzu, Pekingese and pug belonging to this group.

Breeders or a person who raises animals should raise dogs according to their breed and natural tendencies and how they were designed by nature in the first place.

Dog Breeds
